I am a Mason. That is a good thing by the way - it is an honor to be a Mason - though to understand why you will have to accept a few things at face value until you have enough experience to form your own opinion...

The motto of Freemasonry is that the Masons take Good Men and they make them Better. This is true - but it is a little misleading at the same time because in reality what the Masons really do is take Good Men and help them better themselves. I think that we can agree that in the end it all amounts to the same thing, but it is the journey that is really the important part.

My journey into Freemasonry actually began when I was a child though I did not know it at the time; in fact I only recently began to understand it. Memory is a funny thing - they say that you never forget anything that you learn or even see; that it is all there, stored in your mind, available if you only know how to retrieve it. For most people it takes something that is familiar to trigger that sort of recall, and I am no exception.

When I attended lodge for the first time my mentor and friend brought with him a special case in which his masonry related items were kept and which, a few days later triggered a dream that was largely a series of childhood memories. My grandfather had a case like that, he took it with him once a week when he left home for the evening, dressed in his good suit, to attend a meeting. That was all that I knew about it save for the one time that I saw into the open case.

What is Masonry to me? It is a connection to a relationship with my grandfather that I would never have the opportunity to have. It is a sense of understanding and a shared experience. It is an environment where mateship and a shared belief in a Supreme Being creates the potential for even more.

The names in the masthead above are a list of men I admire, men who through circumstance and through service to their community helped to change the world for the better. Each one was a Mason. Each one is a story on paper that grows a little more real to me as I touch upon the shared experience of the traditions of Freemasonry. Each is proof that one man can make a difference.

What does it mean to be a Mason? That is a question that only you can answer - because it is a different answer for everyone. The only way that you can ever really answer that question is by seeking the answer yourself. Begin your own personal journey in Freemasonry today, ask a Mason to guide you, find a mentor. The one thing about it that I can say with certainty is that you will be glad that you did.
