Biosketch

Christopher M. Boots-Faubert escaped the university system with a degree in Engineering and an overpowering urge to work in windowless offices crouched in front of glowing green CRT's. He quickly got over this urge and when IBM Security was not looking, escaped into the wilds of New South Wales, where he reinvented himself as something called a “Consultant.”

In 1991 he departed his beloved island nation on a quest to find himself despite the fact that he knew where he was and was not lost. Being an infidel, he traveled to America, where he met a girl on a train. Sweeping the girl off of her feet, he invited her to dine with him in a fancy restaurant (the dining car) where he attempted to order French Toast only to learn that they did not have any.

In a fit of inspiration, he changed his order to “Two Eggs, any style, with toast and bacon.” When asked by the waiter how he would like his eggs, Chris replied: “Put them in a bowl, add a little milk and vanilla, then whip them furiously. When well mixed, dip the bread into the eggs and cook it on the griddle,” proving to his wife-to-be that he was a clever and resourceful fellow who could get the job done while still maintaining a sense of humor.

From 1991 to 1993 he was employed as a Satellite Ground Station Engineer but abruptly changed professions due to a disagreement with higher-ups regarding the desirability of altering the test signal for a communication satellite to the theme from Airwolf. With the explosion of the public Internet in 1993 Chris decided to leverage his demonstrated skill at breaking in to computers that did not belong to him, and became a Network Security Engineer. This was a career he quite enjoyed until the Tech Crash of 2000, when many companies decided that prayer and a willingness to ignore a problem was preferable to paying to fix it.

Shortly after the Tech Crash of 2000 Chris discovered that a life spent riding motorcycles, fencing, bungee jumping, diving out of planes, and falling from low heights without a safety net actually did have consequences, and found himself disabled and unable to walk. When asked how he felt about no longer being able to use his legs, he is reported to have replied: “Well, in this economy it is not like I am using them anyway!”

Throughout the 00's Chris once again changed careers, this time picking writing as his new vocation. Variously employed as a Technical and Freelance writer, he enjoyed sporadic success in the Magazine and Corporate Newsletter world, but discovered that being a Freelance Writer was not all that much different than being a Consultant, something he already knew how to do, and history, as they say, happened to someone else.

In 2008 he was saved from a life of rejection letters and 400 word pieces in corporate newsletters when he became a columnist for the Cape Cod Times, where he writes about computers, technology, the Internet, and computer gaming, which he assures us he likes a lot.

Chris spends his days researching, writing, raising his two children, a dachshund, a rabbit, a turtle and three cats while trying very hard to stay in the good graces of his wife, who has the patience of a Saint and the temper of an Irish longshoreman. Chris has written six full-length books, a selection of dirty limericks, and a small book of poetry on C+ and Fortran. He is the only person he knows that is fluent in ADA and Pascal, and enjoys tinkering with Linux at the network layer.

Appearances
I write on technology -- In particular I cover the Internet, computers, and every aspect of network security from crackers to Trojan horses, and occaisionally I speak about it. I write extensively on computer and console gaming, both as an avid gamer and as a reviewer.

If any of these subjects interest you and you would like me to speak to your group or program, please feel free to drop me an email - I cannot promise that you will get a yes, but your request will certainly be considered!

A Few Caveats for you to Consider

I am physically disabled and use both a wheelchair and power chair depending upon the situation.

If your facilities are not handicap-accessible that could be a problem that would require some advanced planning. As long as you are located on Cape Cod or the Islands, or within the New England area travel should not be an issue, but be advised that I rarely ever fly - for reasons obvious and not so obvious - and that when I do travel I prefer to take the train.

This naturally limits my range from roughly Boston to Washington DC, and to locations serviced by rail. If your location is any farther, we would need to discuss it.

In the past I have been contacted by attorneys who request my services as an expert witness. After trying that once - - I am always game for new experiences -- I learned that it often involves sitting around courthouses for long periods of time waiting to be called to the stand, and rubbing elbows with a variety of characters from all moral walks of life.

As a consequence of that experience, I will not, under any circumstances, testify as an expert on any subject in court. That is not what I do, so please do not ask!
